30 Apr 05.    About 2/3rds of the games have confirmed re-starts.

25 Apr 05.    Round 1 re-starts today.  The draw has been adjusted slightly so teams are fighting new opponents.  Sent the following E-Mail out to all players:

"Guys

Thank you for your forbearance and sticking with the tournament.
After several attempts at designing a scenario, I am content that the one now available to download off the web site is 'fit for purpose'.
Following the 'byte battle' theme, this is a small map with forces of just over 1400 points per sides, 15 turns with a Variable end.
I have had a slight rethink of how the tournament should be played after a lot of feedback.  The overwhelming consensus is that players want to play the scenario blind, BUT exchange intelligence info by E-Mail, so lets play it that way.

The team draw has been adjusted so please check the Round 1 web page to determine who your opponent is.

The Axis player in each game needs to download the scenario from the web site, and start the game off.

Please note that that due to a confirmed case of cheating in another club, some safeguards have need to be inserted into this tournament.  These have been incorporated into the tournament rules page, but to be sure they are definitely read by all, here is an extract:
1.   All players must keep all the games files until the end of the tournament, and be prepared to E-Mail them to the umpire should they be requested to do so. .
2.   Players must be prepared to give their password to the umpire if requested.
3.   Players if suspicious may ask the umpire to investigate their game.
4.   The umpire may undertake a random check of games at the end of the tournament.

A few further things to note:
a.  When you exchange your first file with your opponent please let me know so I can record this on the web site.  (This is important!!)
b.  If you E-Mail me, please always use your Blitz nickname.

Have a good tournament
Strength and honour
Vulture"

24 Apr 05.    Finished designing the new scenario for Round 1.  Refreshed the Round 1 web page.

18 Apr 05.    Okay, a quick update.  I've had 2 attempts at creating scenarios, and haven't been happy with either of them.  I'm got to have another go this week, although starting Round 3 of the CMBO Campaign will have to take priority just for the moment.

13 Apr 05.    The response to the E-Mail I sent has been overwhelming supportive of the action I have taken.  Thanks for having the faith in me guys  :-)    I'm working on creating a scenario myself.  I'll provide an update early next week.

12 Apr 05.    The tournament is suspended until further notice................................

The following E-Mail has been sent to all players:

"Guys

I have become increasingly unhappy with the CMBB PAIRS KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT 'A Double Hammer Blow'.

The fault is mine and mine alone for choosing what has proved to be a hopeless scenario for this kind of competition. The ability of the Axis player to 'camp' on the Soviet reinforcement point has ruined large numbers of the games.  No criticism is meant here of the Soviet players who have done so, for as I say, the fault is entirely mine.

The problem as I see it is in fact 2 fold:

a.    The scenario was a very very poor choice, and has proven to be hopeless to play, other then blind.  I made a critical mistake in not trying it out first.

b.    I did not articulate clearly enough in the competition that it was an acceptable practice for team mates to exchange information.  The net result of this has been that some teams have been hugely disadvantaged.

After the CMAK Armoured (Team) Joust which was exhausting to run (in fact it is still rumbling on), I had decided not to start any new ones for a while.  Then on a spur of the moment decision, I thought 'what the hell' and decided to run one, and had the whole thing up and going very quickly.  This was a mistake, for on reflection there was insufficient time to ensure I had fully thought all the issues out.  A lesson that has had to be learned again................, do not rush the planning and stage otherwise you will have cause to regret it ............ (deep sigh)

A large number of you have played / are playing in other tournaments of mine and the CMBO campaign.  You will be aware that I always strive to run fair and enjoyable events.  Sadly this tournament is falling far short of those aims/ideals in both departments.

After think long and hard about it, and consulting with friends, I have decided on the following course of action:

1.    Round 1 is immediately suspended, and all results reported thus far are declared null and void.

2.    Round 1 will be re-fought using a different scenario.

3.    The new scenario will be made available to download, 1 week prior to the re-start of the round for players to try out with their team mates, should they so wish.

Please accept my apologies for this mess.  In retrospect I should have sent this E-Mail 2 weeks ago.  I understand that many of you will be unhappy about this, but I feel this is the fairest way to proceed, and the only way to restore credibility to this tournament.

Before the round can re-start, I need you all to confirm by reply to this E-Mail that you are happy (or not as the case may be) to stay in the tournament.  If you wish to withdraw I quite understand.

Vulture"

3 Apr 05.     I need to apologies here.  A degree of confusion has been caused by me not spelling out clearly enough what is acceptable conduct in the tournament and what isn't.  The tournament games do not have to be played blind.................  This is for the simple reason that I intend to use scenarios already available on the web, so it is likely that some of you will have already played them.  It is quite acceptable therefore to exchange info with team mates about how the game plays from the opposite side, and to try the scenario out against each other for instance.  Some teams are already doing this, but some are not.
For those players who have been disadvantaged by this I can only apologies and say that I run tournaments with the best intentions, but sometimes screw up, and this is one of those occasions.

2 Apr 05.    With the exception of 2 games I think the remainder are up and running.

22 Mar 05.    The tournament officially starts today.
Sent the following E-Mail out late last night:
"Guys, I am pleased to announce that the Blitzkrieg 2005 CMBB Pairs Tournament "A Double Hammer Blow" will start on the 22 Mar 05.  Please check the web site to confirm which team you are in, and who your opponent will be in this first round.

21 Mar 05.    Early in the day posted the following onto the Blitz Message Board:
"Gentlemen, an update for those interested / participating in the CMBB Pairs Tournament 'A Double hammer Blow'.  As mentioned in an earlier thread, the progress of the tournament was delayed over the weekend, whilst I was away from the homestead.  The trip involved visiting family and going to one of the best wargame conventions in the UK called 'TRIPLES', where cash was exchanged for some great models for my WW2 and Fantasy armies.
Anyway enough of that meaningless rambling I hear you cry, what about the damn tournament !!!!! ..................... Well, before going to work this morning I finished the Round 1 web page and tonight will upload the scenario for Round 1.  I plan to send an E-Mail out to all participating players advising that the Tournament will officially start on 22 Mar 05.  There are still several teams who have yet to give me names. You have until tonight to do so, otherwise I'll allocate them myself................   That's all for now.
Vulture"

20 Mar 05.    Finished the Round 1 Game Progress web page.

18 Mar 05.    Did the Round 1 draw.  Lack of time precludes completing the relevant web page.  Away now for a few days.  The tournament start will have to wait until next week.

17 Mar 05.    We have another player, welcome along Geordie(FGM).  We now have an even number of teams for the first round (30).  I have paired individual players up now.  Guys please agree on your names.  We'll start the tournament either tonight or tomorrow.

16 Mar 05.    Slight delay to things, we need another player to even up the number of teams.

13 Mar 05.    The number of players keeps increasing daily, many new to the Blitz after my advertising the tournament on the Battlefront web site, so recruitment will continue for a few more days.  At that moment I'm thinking of pairing up all those players not as yet on Wednesday 16th.  I'll do the draw for the first round on that day, and upload the scenario file, and have the tournament officially start on the 17th March.

10 Mar 05.    More new recruits, welcome along guys.

9 Mar 05.    Good progress on recruitment so far.   Created the Tournament Rules page.

8 Mar 05.    Posted notification of the Tournament onto the Battlefront web site.  I have decided to use some of the CMBB Byte Battle scenarios that are available.  Typically they are about 15 turns long and 1,500 points per side on small maps.

7 Mar 05.   Posted the following onto the Blitz Message Board and the FGM forum as well:
"Guys, I'm not running any CMBB Tournaments at the moment, so on the spur of the moment I've decided to rectify this with a CMBB Pairs knockout tournament, to be called 'A Double Hammer Blow'.
Full details still to be advised, and a web site created, but the general thrust of the idea is as follows:
a.    Game type CMBB
b.    Scenario play only.
c.    Players play as teams of 2.
d.    Each team to fight under a historic unit name.
e.    Points to be awarded for each level of defeat / victory.
f.    It will be knockout tournament fought over various rounds.
g.    The top 50% of teams progressing on each occasion through to the next round.     (Note this has been subsequently changed)
h.    Tournament to start early April, and is likely to run for between 6 and 12 months depending on the number of players.
i.    Players can either sign up with friends or be randomly paired off by me if they are in need of a partner.
If your interested in the idea, or have any questions, reply to this posting.
Cheers
Vulture"
